Dust Mites Are a Leading Cause of Allergy Symptoms

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that live at peace with all of us, constantly going about their routine of cleaning up our environment. Unfortunately, for about 10% of the population, the protein DER p1 in their minute droppings causes allergic reactions, which affect their respiratory systems causing allergic reactions and triggering asthmatic attacks.

While they cannot be seen with the naked eye, dust mites populate almost every place in every home all over the world. Second only to pollen, dust mites are one of the greatest producers of allergic reactions among individuals. It is not actually the dust mites themselves that cause this reaction, but the proteins found in the dust mites' fecal deposits. These deposits are disturbed by only the slightest of movements and float into the air, causing them to be breathed in. The inhalation of these deposits is what triggers allergic reactions in many individuals. The protein produced by the dust mite is thought to be the most important allergen associated with asthma. About 10% of the population is allergic to dust mite droppings.

So what can be done to reduce the occurrence of allergic reactions caused by dust mites? Depending on the level of discomfort these symptoms may be causing, there are a few things you can do to help reduce these irritants. Complete elimination of dust mites is unlikely. Reducing populations is the only likely way to reduce allergens in the air. Reducing humidity in the home by using a dehumidifier may help reduce populations, but reducing humidity levels in microclimates, such as in bed fibers or carpet fibers, is impossible. Chemical control is not necessary, nor will it have a lasting effect on dust mite populations. Regular cleaning and vacuuming will have a greater impact.

Studies have found that carpets contain the second highest concentration of allergens found in the home, including dust mites. Vacuuming alone only removes a small portion of these irritants, so it is necessary to have your home's carpets thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis. Hiring a professional carpet cleaning service, and making them aware of your allergy problems is one of the most important things you can do to help decrease the amount of dust mites and other allergens in your home. Carpets should be professionally cleaned every 6-12 months, or more depending on the level of discomfort felt by these allergy producers.
